About The Author
Sex Trafficking can be a tricky topic to talk about, especially on paper. Growing up, that phrase would’ve been so foreign to me that I would’ve completely looked the other way and just ignored it. But now, especially at this age, I thank God I that I am familiar with what it stands for, but more importantly that there is an organization dedicated to fighting what I personally believe is the most heinous act of humanity currently happening right now.
The first time I heard about this cause was when a former English teacher of mine, came to the school just to talk about this topic. It was absolutely devastating to me, it crushed me to think that this was happening right past my house, and throughout the world for that matter. I remember going home from school and just being confused; this wasn't something that was being reported on CNN or Fox or 12 News. I had never heard about it, and I know for a fact that my friends and family didn’t know what it really stood for.
Why I wrote this poem was based off of one thing: anger. On one hand, I was angry about what Sex Trafficking is and what it stands for as a whole. On the other hand, I was angry about the fact that I could not do anything about it. Long story short, I wrote the poem to express my rage, and spent a week writing it until I completely justified my anger and my thoughts and everything on the situation. I watched documentaries upon documentaries until I felt like I was about to be sick to my stomach about the whole thing. Even now thinking about it puts my stomach in a loop.
Sex Trafficking is important to me because everyone has a voice and it is their god-given right to use it. But not them. What can they do? The only time they can use their voice is when they’re told to. Why should I sit here and talk about what this means to me when they, the ones who are in this mess, cannot? If the victims cannot speak for themselves, then I will gladly stand up, and be their voice. The time is now, and now’s a better time than ever.
